About Rita
Outside the clinic, Rita is a proud mum of two boys and a published Portuguese fiction writer. Before physiotherapy, she studied International Politics and completed a Master’s in Peace Studies, with experience working in human rights across Colombia, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan. She is fluent in English and Portuguese and also speaks Spanish and French.
Clinical Experience
Rita brings a rich and diverse background to Pelvic Health Melbourne, shaped by both her professional journey and life experience across multiple countries and healthcare settings. Originally from Portugal, Rita completed her physiotherapy training as a second degree and began her career in neurological rehabilitation, working with stroke patients in both acute hospital settings and community-based care.
Her career has since spanned a wide range of clinical environments, including orthopaedics, aged care, and global health settings. Rita has worked in refugee health in Malaysia, taught physiotherapy students in Mozambique, and trained as a Clinical Pilates instructor in South Africa. This breadth of experience has given her a deep appreciation for movement, function, and the individual nature of recovery.
Rita’s interest in pelvic health developed through her own pregnancy and postnatal journey, sparking a strong passion for supporting others through similar challenges. She is particularly interested in helping clients navigate bladder and bowel concerns, pelvic girdle pain, and movement changes associated with pregnancy, postnatal recovery, and beyond. Rita brings a thoughtful, holistic approach to care, combining her clinical knowledge with genuine empathy and a strong focus on restoring confidence in movement.
